how well you understand these things as an attorney and as a correspondent. that's a big level. he we are a case that fascinated a lot of people, including me. what did you think? can eve you even ayou is stunned? i. have to say i was surprised. because how quickly the jurors came back with this verdict and the fact it was a wholesale rejection of the prosecution's case. i mean, the jurors had an array of charges to consider. everything from the top charge of first-degree death penalty eligible murder all wait down to just a straight charge of child abuse, and even though anyone watching this case could see the problems of proof the prosecutors were dealt. the fact we don't know when caylee died, or exactly how caylee died although prosecutors had theories that were consistent with the evidence, but the evidence wasn't positive of those theories. at the end of the day, i thought the jurors might get back there in the jury room and say you know what? given her behavior, not reporting the child missing for 31 day, that search of death emanating out of the trunk of the car, multiple witn

tell you, it takes about an hour and-a-half. that's what it takes to clear the national mall. the big crowds now probably on metro trains, people going home right now. let me show you what folks really came for, a spectacular fireworks display every single year. it started at 9:10 this evening and lasted about 20 minutes. the majority of the people gathered on the grass between the washington monument and the reflecting pool in front of the lincoln memorial. just a melting pot of people attending. not just locals but people from all over the world and this is a major draw for tourists. >> i like it very much. i'm russian. i want to say. actually cancelled their fireworks show. but over all the big one going off. maybe saw light sprinkles this evening. no severe thunderstorm warnings issued tonight. that's the good news. we still see a little bit of action on the doppler radar. look at the green you see out to the west basically out towards 66 and 81. we have some showers. light stuff here. not amounting to a whole lot. but around warrenton, chantilly getting some light showers and bethesda getting light sprinkles as well. 73 in leesburg. all the way down to 69 in martinsburg. now, what we're expecting the next few days, cloudy but dry as you're heading back to work and then becoming sunny and hot in a lot of places. chance of showers and thunderstorms do remain with us pretty much all week. the frontal system doesn't really want to move on that quickly through. mere is the future cast -- here is the future cast. maybe to the bay we can see some activity. maybe thunderstorm or moderate rainfall there. tomorrow morning some cloudy conditions. the clouds do start to clear upstarting from the north and then heading down t

's immediately when the adrenaline kicked in. we all knew this was going to be big. ai journalists believed it was going to be bad news. we felt the jury hadn't deliberated that long. as we wait for the judge, it's deathly silent in there. everybody is in there but nobody is saying a word. we saw the defense team, the prosecution. jose baez was late to arrive. then casey anthony came in all eyes laser fixed on her. and you could see this was a terrified young woman. you could see she was trembling. you could see the emotion in her face. you saw cheney mason, jose baez get down on bended knee and get very close to her and start talking to her. then the judge comes in, then the jury comes in and then you heard the verdict. complete change of emotions then from what you saw, from abject fear to what was just pure elation. and there she was holding on to the hand of jose baez. once everything will be read, no other sound in the courtroom except the sobbing of an entire defense team. it was like they all let out this great sob at once, and then you saw the piling on as they all began hugging and

african-americans who were living in the washington area. and they would make a big effort to impress lincoln. they could dress in their finest close. men wearing civil war, both the gray and the blue they got for battle fields. they'd line up and sing spirituals and entertainment with these spirituals. and he was so moved to tearing often that a lot of people around him thought this sort of deepened his commitment to abolition and to emancipation. just being in the presence of the african-americans had somebody slaves and talking to them. especially what became quasi religious ceremonies. he was sort of semireligious figure among freed slaves in those days. >> host: what strikes me when you go through all of the presidents and you mention them all is oscillation. you've got -- you have a lincoln and an andrew johnson. who was pretty much indifferent. he was to the plight of people of african-american descent. >> guest: yeah. the other oscillation is a class-based oscillation. you had people in the white house that served several. they could observe how people behaved towards people.
